Carson Prize

We are delighted to inform you that the Art Club at Windmill Integrated Primary School has won 1st Prize within the Key Stage 2 category of the Carson Awards. Congratulations to Mrs Stephanie Hazelton (parent and artist) and the Art Club on such a fantastic achievement.

The Carson Awards are named in honour of the legendary Northern Ireland comedian Frank Carson and his son Tony. Frank and Tony are both passionate supporters of integrated education and have a long standing relationship with the Integrated Education Fund. Sponsored by Tony, the Awards are now in their tenth year and it is hoped the scheme will run for many years to come.

As you are aware Windmill Integrated Primary School undertakes an after school Art club each term. This term the club worked on a ‘RESPECT’ piece. The ‘RESPECT’ piece ties in with ‘What Integrated Education means to me.’ One of Windmill’s tag lines is ‘Respecting Difference’. The pupils decided to undertake some art work around RESPECT. They took each letter of the word RESPECT and brainstormed lots of ideas around ‘What Integrated Education means to Windmill’.

Integrated Education means RESPECT for :

R- different religions i.e Protestant (Presbyterian, Church of Ireland, Baptist), Catholic, Hindu, Muslim, St Brigid’s Cross

E- Education- Equality of opportunity, Broad and balanced curriculum, extra- curricular,

S- Range of sports played by the different traditions represented at Windmill- sharing, Similarities,

P- People- (Total school community- pupils, parents, staff, BOG)- partnerships

E- Environment Windmill is an Eco school- looks after its environment

C- Range of musical  culture- piano, violin, bag pipes, bodhran, flute, tin whistle, guitar

T- Technology- ICT,

Each letter, measuring 2 foot wide by 4 foot high of the word RESPECT was carved out of plywood .

We wanted all the colours of the rainbow. Children covered each letter in a range of coloured paper squares/fabric of different shades to give a pixilated effect.

R for Religion was Red

E for Education was orange

S for Sport was Yellow

P for People was Green

E for Environment was Blue

C for Culture was Indigo

T for Technology was Violet

This art piece will be displayed in the Key Stage 2 area for all to admire and enjoy. It will also be showcased in Belfast around September/October 2018.

This award will be of great benefit to the Art club as it has obtained £500 in prize money, Windmill itself and the wider Integrated Education Movement in Northern Ireland.
