P2 Working hard with their Maths
Exploring Cuisenaire.
As an introduction to using Cuisenaire rods, the P.2. children were encouraged to explore the rods by making pictures. This develops their imagination and in addition assists the children in recognising and becoming familiar with the colour and length of the rods
Step Patterns.
The next step in using Cuisenaire involves the children making a step pattern with the rods. This helps the children to recognise that each colour represents a number. When the children are confident in making the step pattern, the teacher asks the children to hold up the 2 rod, 5 rod etc…until they become very familiar with the number
Making addition Number Stories.
The children are making the number-bonds for the story of 7, using the pairs of Cuisenaire rods. This enables the children to visualise number-bonds through the colour of the rods. This will help them to memorise the number facts in a fun and creative way. Once the children have made the number story out of Cuisenaire, they record their sums on pages, working with their partner. The children make number stories up to 10.
